What the busk?

No, seriously…have you heard of busking before? It’s not a strange sport In the Olympics and it certainly isn’t some new term from Gen Z. Hop on this time machine with us and let’s take you through the history and breakdown of busking.

Busking is the act of performing in public places for tips and gifts, otherwise known as street performing. From Las Vegas to New York City, Key West to Venice Beach, and New Orleans to Washington, D.C., you most likely have seen this in some form or fashion. This here lil’ side hustle is practiced all over the world and actually dates back to the Middle Ages, so don’t write it off just yet!

For all our history buffs and mega-nerds (we love y’all): the term busking was first noted in the English language around the mid 1860s in Great Britain. The verb “to busk”, from the word busker, comes from the Spanish root word “buscar”, with the meaning "to seek". We can tell you firsthand - these performers are really seeking that next big break or that cash money, honey.

It Girls and Co. has provided a foundation, a home or a “hub”, if you will, for an incredible pool of women who have learned and adopted busking as a way of life, whether temporary or permanent, to help sustain a living or support their goals. With over five years in operation, we have seen how busking is a great way to build confidence, network and make extra income. Some famous people who started out busking in their pre-fame days include the likes of Ed Sheeran, Robin Williams, Tracy Chapman and Bernie Mac.
